Moxa Japan
Moxibustion Workshop

A licensed practitioner teaches you to use Japanese moxa on your own body, in a Shibuya clinic that has been there since 2014.

About the workshop

Moxibustion is a form of traditional Japanese medicine with fifteen hundred years of history behind it. The moxa you use is made from mugwort.

Over 90 minutes, a licensed practitioner will teach you to find the points on your own body and to place and light the moxa on them yourself. Moxa needs no special equipment: you can care for your own body with your own hands.

You learn it hands-on, so you do not just try moxa once. You will be able to keep using it at home, for your own health and your family’s.

Shimpei Fukumoto

Licensed acupuncturist and moxibustion practitioner (はり師・きゅう師)

Shimpei has fourteen years of experience and some fifty thousand treatments behind him. He trained under Ryu Goto in a lineage of practitioners reaching back to the Azuchi-Momoyama period (the late 1500s), and opened his own clinic in Shibuya’s Sakuragaokacho in 2014.

Working with patients day after day, he noticed that moxibustion is barely known in Japan, while doctors and practitioners abroad are deeply interested in it. With people from all over the world coming to Shibuya, he started Moxa Japan a few minutes from Shibuya Crossing so they could try it for themselves.

“If Japanese traditional medicine spreads around the world, I believe it can contribute to people’s health and to world peace. Moxa Japan is a small but important step toward that.”

— Shimpei Fukumoto, Moxa Japan

Alongside his clinical practice, he teaches traditional East Asian medicine through Shibuya City’s adult education program and heads the Traditional Medicine International Exchange Network. His work has also been featured by the BBC.
